The first public game of football played by women in Australia took place at the Brisbane Cricket Ground, The Gabba, on 24 September 1921.

A record breaking 10,000 people attended the match.

On the day, The Reds, of North Brisbane, won by 2 goals to nil over the Blues, of South Brisbane. The Blues were captained by Miss G Wenlock.

By the end of 1921, the English Football Association, threatened by the rising popularity of women's football in the UK, stated "the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged."

Women's football was thus banned on any FA Associated pitches in the UK, and was shortly followed by Australia in 1922.

Despite matches still being played following this decision, women's football in Australia lost momentum and faced significant hurdles in striving for recognition.
